2014 Chateau du Plantier

Looks like 2014 Bordeaux is really good. This one has character. There is nose and taste of cherry, like most Bordeauxs, there is some other fruit in the mix. But there is a distinct note: spices. Quite complex, can't separate them (I'm no proffesional taster), but mostly reminds south. Caribbean, probably, or something from North Africa. Can't tell. But very good.
Had it with mahi mahi, but it's a great pairing for any meat. Would go great with spicy food, too.
Decant or aerate. It's way too young to drink straight from the bottle.

2012 Les Granilles

Good, classic Côte du Rhône. Nose and taste of chocolate, leather, a hint of tobacco. Although it's 3 years old, use aerator or decanter for best taste.
Had it with fruit and chocolate dessert, but it would go great with any meat, especially venison.

2010 Lopez de Haro Rioja

Strange impression. Let's say I expected more. This wine was rated at 91 points by Wine Advocate, quite high. But, in my opinion, good wine should have complex nose and taste. Not this one. First, second and third thing you notice in smell and taste is raspberry. A little bit of sugar is not bad by itself, but with strong raspberry taste doesn't work. Aerator makes wine smoother, but doesn't change the impression. Probably won't buy it again, there are better riojas out there.
Had it with ham (well, it's Xmas). Not a bad pairing for lamb or good steak as well, but again, you can buy better wines.

2012 Le Rosé de Clarke by Baron Edmond de Rothschild

My first experience with Rose Bordeaux was not very good. Don't remember what it was, bland and easy to forget. This one is quite different. Elegant, light and tasty. Light raspberry, citrus and maybe a little red currant in nose and taste. Just a bit of sugar, but not enough to kill the taste. Went nicely with seafood paella, would go great with any seafood.

2010 Haute Pierre Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Great wine by one of my favorite producers. I like Rhône wines, they are the best reds I know. I like Delas, never had Delas wine I didn't like. 2010 was, in my opinion, one of the best years in Rhône wine region. And, of course, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is my favorite wine. Adding all that together...
I was scared when opened the bottle and tasted it. It was rough. Poured through the aerator. Better, but tastes like ordinary Rhône wine, not what I expected. But then... With every sip, it was better. On the second glass, it became great. Lesson to myself: always open a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape at least half an hour before you drink it. An hour would be better.
It has that specific nose and taste you won't confuse with anything. Only Châteauneuf-du-Pape has that wonderful nose of chocolate, old leather, cherry, a hint of tobacco. Only this great wine has this smoothness (again, wait half an hour after opening a bottle!). Careful, it has 14% alcohol by volume, effect is quite strong, but very pleasant.
The best pairing for Rhône wines is venison. And vice versa. But it's a great wine for any meat. I had it with veal and mushroom dish today and can't imagine better wine with it. It's probably too intensive for fish, although might go well with smoked salmon.
It's expensive. I can't afford $40 wine often. But it worth every penny.

Louis Bouillot Rose

Good sparkling wine from Burgundy. Can't be called Champagne, because it's not from Champagne. But if you are a not professional tester, you won't feel the difference. All attributes of good sparkling wine: lots of citrus in smell and taste, doesn't smell yeast at all. Good for any celebration. As for pairing, great with any seafood appetiser or any dessert.
I also tasted white sparkling wine from this company, total disappointment. Choose rose.

2012 Château Grand Jean

Good, classic Bordeaux. I'm not a fan of 2012 Bordeaux, but this one is good. Deserves the medal. Strong nose, with black currant note and just a hint of chalk. Dry, not a bit of sugar. A little bit tangy, lots of tannins in it. Had it with smoke salmon pizza, good pairing for any meat, poultry, high end fish, like tuna, mahi mahi, swordfish, marlin.

2014 Marqués de Cáceres Rose

One of the best rose wines in my book. Quite substantial, it's Rioja, after all. Always keep several bottles in my cellar, just in case. As usual with rose, it's hard to separate components of the nose or taste, I enjoy the result. Had it with shrimp dinner today. Great pairing for any seafood, would go well with pork, poultry or veal, although I always prefer red in such cases. Also great choice if you have dinner starting with seafood appetizer, having meat as a main course and don't want to have different wines with it (for example, you are driving after dinner and don't want to go over limit).

2011 Chateau des Milles Agnes Mozart

Classic Bordeaux. This one deserves gold medal. Everything as it should be: complex nose with strong black currant note, good taste, not a bit of sugar. Liked it, probably would buy more if it's still on sale at Haskell's. Had it with mahi-mahi pie, but it would go great with any red meat, poultry, high end fish like tuna or swordfish. Some people think that fish is only good with white (or, for adventurous, rose) wines. I would only say: try it once with red. Yes, fish with white meat, like cod, haddock, flounder etc doesn't go with red wines. But fish with denser meats, like tuna, marlin, swordfish, opa go with red wines perfectly. Salmon, too.

2011 Chateau Monsegur

Strange impression. 2011 was a good year for Bordeaux. This wine received gold medal somewhere (I don't care much for such things, but). If you describe smell, it's interesting: black currant and rowan. Same berries are in the taste, plus a hint of chalk and bummer: big sweet note. It's not that big as in some fruit bombs, but somehow kills this wine. At least for me.
Would never buy again.

2004 El Coto Rioja

This bottle spent at least 7 years in my small cellar waiting for occasion. Great Rioja, matured nicely. I thought it should be at peak of maturity, but running it through aerator found that it has more potential. A pity local shops in Twin Cities area don't offer El Coto anymore.
We had it with lamb tajine, which filled my nostrils with smells of spices, so I didn't feel any fine points of smell. Overall, it smells like a great Rioja: powerful, with leather and a little smoke. There is a distinct leather note in taste and that particular taste of mature wine you won't confuse with anything. It's mature enough wine, shows a little bit of discoloration, but surprisingly, no sediment at all!
Great pairing for tajine.  I usually prefer Rioja with lamb, but sure it's a great pairing for any red meat.

2012 Chateau Moulin des Richards

Another bottle from the box mentioned in previous post. Pretty good. And pretty different. This is classic, medium body Bordeaux. Very pronounced nose and taste of black currant. Subtle taste of chalk, more like a hint. A bit of sugar, not much, just enough to give it some subtle sweetness.
Enjoyed it with veal. Also good pairing for poultry, any meat, and some fish, like tuna, mahi-mahi, swordfish, salmon.
This rounds it up for nice box I bought at Costco. I already disposed of other two bottles, so no posts about those. But they were good too, each in its own way.
Note: I don't get any compensation, monetary or not, from Costco.

2012 Chateau Mallard Les Rousseaux

I am not a fan of 2012 Bordeaux. Year was hard on the region, and results are spotty. But, cheap bastard I am, was seduced by Costco. Couple of weeks ago, I saw a box (nicely made presentation box made of wood, with transparent plastic in the front) with four bottles of Bordeaux for $30. Bought it. And enjoyed it.

Chateaux Mallard Les Rousseaux. Never hear of it before, as well as about any of other producers from this box. Nice wine. A little bit light for Bordeaux, with pronounced nose and taste of black currant and blackberry. A remote subtle note of old leather. No sugar in the taste at all. Enjoyed it with chicken pizza. It would go quite well with any white meat, veal or some fish, like tuna, mahi-mahi or swordfish.
So, you can get good 2012 Bordeaux. Confirmed again: guys at Costco know how to select wine.
